Informazioni cliniche

Negli ultimi anni si è osservata la diffusione globale nuovi virus e agenti patogeni. Le malattie associate sono definite “malattie infettive emergenti”. Questo termine si riferisce a malattie infettive che si manifestano per la prima volta in una popolazione o che sono aumentate rapidamente in termini di incidenza o distribuzione regionale. I virus trasmessi dagli artropodi, noti anche come arbovirus, sono tra gli agenti causali più comuni di malattie nell'uomo in tutto il mondo e rappresentano un problema crescente degli ultimi decenni. Gli arbovirus hanno una grande capacità di mutare e adattarsi, motivo per cui spesso causano epidemie. Esempi importanti sono il Dengue, il Chikungunya e lo Zika, che si è diffuso in gran parte del Sud America nel 2015/2016. Tuttavia, anche in climi temperati, come in Europa, gli arbovirus come il West Nile e il Chikungunya hanno causato in passato epidemie stagionali. I decorsi clinici delle malattie causate dagli arbovirus sono molto simili, per cui la diagnosi non può basarsi solo sul quadro clinico.

Oltre ai già citati arbovirus, esistono diversi altri agenti patogeni che causano grandi epidemie e potrebbero trasformarsi in un significativo problema di salute globale, come la SARS-CoV-2, che ha causato una pandemia.

Diagnostica

La diagnosi di queste malattie è particolarmente complessa, poiché spesso non sono disponibili sistemi di test diagnostici commerciali per i parametri corrispondenti. In genere, l'infezione da un agente patogeno di una malattia emergente viene diagnosticata in base a criteri clinici, epidemiologici e a risultati di laboratorio. La diagnostica di laboratorio utilizza metodi di rilevamento diretti e indiretti ed è particolarmente importante per testare i pazienti dopo viaggi in aree endemiche e per lo screening di ampi gruppi di popolazione nel caso di un'epidemia o di una pandemia.
